Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson has reportedly taken up residence in one of the glitter strip’s most expensive homes, a multi-million dollar riverfront mansion on the Isle of Capri.
Sources say the former professional wrestler will lease the Nerang River home while he films the $100 million disaster movie San Andreas in locations around southeast Queensland.
“Mornin’ greetings from the Gold Coast, Australia … #RiseAndGrind #AussieLove” he tweeted and facebooked.
The prestige home is on the market, with owner Mara Spong seeking offers above $15 million.
The six-bedroom, six-bathroom house has a pool, gym, sauna, home theatre and temperature-controlled wine cellar. It also includes maid’s quarters, basement parking for six vehicles and a private beach with fixed jetty and pontoon.
The listed real estate agents yesterday denied Johnson was staying in the house, insisting it was “owner occupied”.
A neighbour said “the owner” had been seen at the property on Tuesday.
The home, currently listed for McGrath sale at $15 million plus, boasts:
- Six kingsize bedrooms, each with an ensuite and with a dressing room off the master suite
- A kitchen with a butler’s pantry and a cold room
- A gymnasium and a lanai overlooking a waterfront pool
- A jetty and pontoon
- A sandy beach
- A home theatre and billiards den
- A sauna and heated spa
- A wine cellar for 4000 bottles
- Basement six car parking.
- A lift
- A maid’s quarters.
The house was built by surfwear industry pioneer Doug Spong and then-wife Mara in the 1990s to a design by architectural firm Hamilton Hayes Henderson.
Real estate agent John McGrath has described the home as one of the best he has seen in Australia.
San Andreas is expected to pump $30 million into the Queensland economy, employ about 170 local production crew and provide roles for up to 2600 on-screen extras.
Johnson plays a US helicopter pilot who makes a desperate trip across California to save his estranged daughter after a massive earthquake.
The movie will be directed by Canadian Brad Peyton, who has previously worked with Johnson on 2012’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.
Johnson, known as The Rock, was a popular figure in America’s World Wrestling Entertainment.
His first feature film was 2001’s The Mummy Returns. Since then he’s become a highly bankable action star. The latest outing for the man with bulging biceps is in Hercules, to be released later this year.
Forbes named Johnson the top grossing actor of 2013, with his films raking in $1.3 billion around the world.
He is believed to be paying $20,000 a week in rent for the sprawling mansion with living space totalling 1,630 square metres with 705 square metres of outdoor living areas.
