One Direction announce visit to Australia
One Direction announced back in May that they would be heading Down Under in February for their On The Road Again tour.
And now the boy band have another surprise for Australian fans after taking to social media on Saturday to tell followers they will be performing at the ARIA Awards this month.
The boys used a YouTube video to deliver the news, telling viewers ‘we’re so excited.’
The video shows Harry, Louis, Liam and Niall all sitting on a couch without their fifth band member, Zayn.
21-year-old Niall begins the short clip by saying ‘hello Aussie’s.’
‘Ahead of our Australian tour in February we’re so excited to let you know that in celebration of our album Four we’re coming back to see you in November to perform on the ARIA’s.’
‘Lots of love and see you soon mate,’ says the Irish singer, throwing in an Australian catchphrase at the end.
While at the ARIA’s they will be performing their new song Steal My Girl, which has topped the charts since its September release.
ARIA CEO, Dan Rosen said: “We are very excited to welcome One Direction back to Sydney to join us in celebrating our biggest ARIAs ever. To have one of the world’s most popular acts perform on the ARIA stage this year is just phenomenal. The fans are in for a real treat.”
The video for ‘Steal My Girl’, the new single from One Direction’s upcoming album ‘Four’ (released globally on November 17), stars Danny DeVito and has already clocked up over 16 million views on YouTube.
‘Four’ is the follow-up to ‘Midnight Memories’, the album that made One Direction the first band in history to debut at the top of the US Billboard chart with their first three albums and saw them named the IFPI’s Global Artist of 2013 for becoming the biggest selling act in the world. ‘Midnight Memories’ went straight to #1 on the ARIA Album Chart and has achieved Double Platinum sales and featured the hit singles ‘Best Song Ever’ (ARIA Top 5 single and Platinum sales) and ‘Story Of My Life’ (ARIA Top 3 single and certified Double Platinum).
The ARIA’s is an awards ceremony which recognises and celebrates the achievements of Australian artists.
This year the 28th annual awards will be held at the Event Centre at the Star in Sydney on November 26.
Fellow boy band 5 Seconds of Summer are also set to perform at the ceremony as the opening act.
The band will go up against Sia and Iggy Azalea for Song Of The Year and cross their fingers for Best Group, Breakthrough Artist and Best Pop Album.
Psychedelic rock group Tame Impala were last year’s big winners, taking home the Album Of The Year and Best Group awards.
Reality show pop stars had a good run too, with Australian Idol’s Jessica Mauboy winning Best Female Artist, Guy Sebastian taking Best Pop Release and Best Live Act, and X Factor’s Samantha Jade’s Firestarter being awarded Best Video.
Meanwhile, One Direction managed to beat out Bruno Mars, P!nk and more to win Best International Act.
The band is again nominated in the same category this year and will be up against the likes of Lorde, Katy Perry and Beyonce.
